weekend update
Apr. 5th, 2009 09:48 pmThe weekend goes by so fast. Especially when one wakes up late. (and by 'late' I mean 10 am)
Saturday I hit up the spring yarn sale at the local yarn store. I bought a bunch of yarn - enough alpaca/wool for a sweater, and enough cashmere/silk for a small scarf or good sized cowl. I also ran over to work and grabbed a couple of the boxes I'd unpacked to stash at home for whenever we move. For dinner I made pimped out mac and cheese, which involves a box of kraft macaroni and cheese, chicken, broccoli, onions, and extra cheese. Oh, and crumbled ritz crackers on top. For that extra touch of class.
Daniel and I ran down to Yakima for dinner and shopping this afternoon. There's this diner there that we have an irrational fondness of. It's not amazingly cheap, the food isn't great (with the significant exception of the soup which is always DELICIOUS), and the decor is cheesey. But we had dinner there anyway. And then we went shopping. Go Target! I also picked up a pair of shorts and a pair of capris at Value Village. I want summer to come and to stay, and I've been encouraged this weekend.
The weather is finally turning.. for a couple of days at least. It's been in the 60s this weekend and is supposed to hit 70 by Tuesday, before turning colder and rainy for the rest of the week. I was dressed for spring yesterday, and it was good. I am going to see what the morning looks like, but am seriously considering a skirt, or at least sandals.
I've been a little annoyed by Amazon. I preordered a book back in like, February. The book was released on April 1, but I still haven't gotten it. Normally Amazon has amazing shipping speed to our area. I hope it shows up tomorrow, maybe with my other, more recent amazon order.
I finished World War Z by Max Brooks. I really enjoyed reading this. I had no idea what I was in for as I bought the book on a whim. But I found it to be a great work of storytelling. Very believable - that is, very realistic for a book about those who survived the living dead. I'd recommend it to anyone. It really performs as an oral history of the zombie war, just like the subtitle says.
I've just started In the Wake of the Plague: The Black Death and the World it Made by Norman Cantor. The first thing I notice is the massive amount of white space on every page - there's a lot of it, and the text is relatively large too. Because of that, I think this will be a pretty fast read. The only question in my mind is how much new information I'll encounter, being fairly well versed in the subject already through connecting topics, although I've never studied the plague itself intensively. Well, it should be fun anyway.
