I want a pair of hiking sandals. Or good hiking boots. But preferably sandals. Suggestions?

My go-to hiking shoes have been the Doc Marten boots I already have on hand. However, one pair ends up rubbing too much too quickly, and the other is worn down unevenly on the heels which becomes uncomfortable on flat surfaces. The other issue with the boots I have are that my feet overheat pretty badly and I don't care for that.

Last weekend I was wearing my dainty Dansko Lolitas while hiking. While they are excellent flat land walking shoes, they are not engineered for hiking up and down hillsides. I'm thinking about a pair of Keens. Chacos and Tevas don't seem substantial enough for the kind of things we do sometimes (at least on the first page of zappos results).

Tell me what you know, please.

I love my hiking boots. They are gore-tex boots from LL Bean and they are wonderful. The gore-tex makes them waterproof but breathable. The lining wicks away moisture from the feet to help keep them cool. They are on the expensive side though I lucked out with the fact that there is an LL Bean outlet store near my house in NJ but even at full price they are worth it. I bought them 3 years ago and spent the first two years wearing them practically everyday and not just when I was hiking. I doubt you would recall but they were basically the only shoe I wore while in Seattle. They are still good to wear and will most likely still be usable for years to come. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and mine are a mid-weight type which are heavy enough to be sturdy but not too heavy that it tires me out when hiking. So if you are looking for a pair of quality boots that will last forever and don't mind making a small investment I highly recommend them!

Sorry they aren't sandals but I'm not brave enough to hike in sandals. Plus I really hate dirty feet!

I've got a pair of Salomon Techamphibian amphibious hiking shoes that I bought for when I hike in to a rafting put-in. They're supportive, rugged, and very breathable.

I got mine 4 years ago at REI and they are still going strong. I bought the mens ones I think, since they didn't have a women's version yet, but they do now. They run about $80.

YES! Get the Keens. I have four pair of them, and they are the most comfortable shoes ever.

Yeah, Keens are the most protective so if you find comfy ones, I'd go with them. However for me, I've found Keens run a little narrow so I can't usually wear them. Plus depending on the style they can be closterphic and/or the abundance of straps make them more likely to rub the wrong way or be harder to adjust.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Chacos, and they are my prefered hiking 'shoe'. I've yet to totally smash my toes wearing them hiking yet.

JtB has Keens and likes them lots. I have a pair of Lands End ones that are similar and that I like. They do well for me for trails and some rocks.
