Daniel Tammet is on good morning america right now. He's a high fuctioning autistic savant. It's amazing. The way in which he describes how his mind functions, how he understands numbers, is simply astounding. Each number from 1 to 10000 has its own unique texture, color, shapw, qualities. He says that 6 is a small dark cold number. To understand sadness he envisions himself inside the hole of that small dark cold empty number.

When he closes his eyes, he sees a beautiful landscape where these numbers exist. He can easily compute mathematics. They asked him to divide 13 by 97 and he did it in just a few seconds, if that. He has a book. It must be fascinating.

And he can learn languages in a week. Icelandic. In a week. The brain is a really amazing faculty - interesting the trade-offs between mental facility and emotional understanding, though.

very cool - i'm gonna check my library to see if they have that book. i read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night, which was written from an autistic boy's standpoint, and there was lots of stuff in there about how he related to colors and numbers. fascinating.
