I finally updated my profile. The paragraph I had up there before was not good. The new bit gets more to the point of things, I feel.

Getting my lady bit professionally poked tomorrow. I will be speaking to the doctor before hand requesting that they give me a bit more warning than last time. I'm vaguely considering a switch to Depo. But I'm afraid if I did my periods would fall out of whack again. They were never naturally in anything resembling whack to begin with, and I appreciate the precise timing I get with the pill. So.... probably not. But it would be nice to not be tied to a pill box.

Will probably be going to the yarn store after the appointment because getting poked is a good excuse for some yarn petting/shopping/lounging around. For the record, I do plan on nekkid knitting whilst I wait for the pokey doctor, because otherwise I'm just sitting nekkid looking at the BMI chart again.

I am an unproductive member of society this week. I have spent at least two hours today playing Guitar Hero, probably more. Mmmmm non-productivity.

Be careful with Depro. You don't want to be on it for more than 2-3 years because it damages the strength of your bones. (It also has significant side effects and lots of women have problems after). I guess what I'm saying is...do your research before you switch to make sure it's the best option.

I'm kind of cynical about doctors. I think they're too busy and overworked to really be able to look out for people's best interests anymore.

Yeah, I had looked into a little and seen the research on osteoporosis and the weight gain, both of which turned me off of it somewhat. The whole tied to a pill box thing stands, though I've not had any issues forgetting any.

I don't care for doctors. I pretty much only go to my annual and in extreme circumstances. Like when I had ear-jaw pain that made me cry and not be able to sleep at all - actually the dr. just told me to get ibuprofen and take 4. Which worked. Or when I had a weird looking spider bite.... and they told me to wait and see some more. Yeah. Not big on drs.

My favorite is the time I waited months for my yearly physical and 45 minutes int he waiting room and then the doctor was like "You don't need a gyno exam, you're young. See you next year!"

Depro would scare me though. I mean, think of how many hormones they have to give you to make it last for 3 months. Scary...

My favorite doctor story is the one where at every appointment for five years she told me to lose ten pounds. You saw how I looked last year--where was I supposed to lose ten pounds from? Hello--try looking at my body and fitness rather than at your height/weight chart. Luckily, I don't have to see her again since I'm no longer on state health insurance.

But do you take your pill in the same half-hour window every day? Because that's the only way to get maximum efficacy, plus if you have any kind of stomach problem, you're not as well-protected.

I've never had any problems with Depo and have been told by several doctors that as long as you have good calcium intake and do weight-bearing exercise, the bone issue is not such a concern--bone density is something you can check while you're on it, so it's not like you can't track the possible problem and do stuff to counteract it. Also, it didn't put my period off-track--it stopped it entirely. Which, as far as I'm concerned, is awesome. :p

Have you thought about NuvaRing? I used it for almost a year. I couldn't stick w/ it because for me it messed up my periods. But, all of the varieties of the pill I tried did that, too. So don't let my experience turn you off! It was horribly convenient. And you honestly don't feel it. And in our experience, neither does he. :)

I've heard other people have had issues with it, both the hormones and the fact that it could come out, and I worry about its compatibility with a DivaCup. (Which I forget if the owner of this journal uses, so I'll shut up.)

It's fine w/ a Diva Cup. A) usually, you're menstruating when the ring is out (you take it out for a week), so often it's not an issue. And B) the ring doesn't have to be in any particular position. It usually stays in place best if it's higher up. But so long as it's "up there", it's fine... so it's not like the whole cup+IUD issue where you have to be super careful.

There was only one occasion where I had a problem with the ring staying in... and that was after some particularly rambunctious nookie. :) After that, I just checked to make sure it was there after sex... and all was well.

Different strokes... but except for the fact that my body doesn't do hormones, it was a good option.

Huge Diva Cup fan here.

I'd be a little worried about the ring staying in place. I'd tried those Instead Cups before I found the Diva Cup and I had bad reactions to those.

I'm really torn on the whole birth control issue. I went off the pill like five years ago because I was doing that four periods a year thing and it stopped working, which was really annoying... and even after that, I'd had to switch pills three times because of random formulary issues, and my hormones really got out of whack. Now that I have my DivaCup I'd be willing to go back to something that made me have a period every month (because, hello, that's what I have now and it's so much less of a pain), but I think it's pretty much the only option for me. The IUD was looking intriguing, but based on my current lack of a permanent partner and the fact that it (again) doesn't work great with a DivaCup (which I am NEVER GIVING UP EVER), I've ruled against it.

Another reason to knit in there: to keep warm. At my place, they keep the room at like 20 degrees for all of the flushed pregnant ladies and conveniently give you only one hankie-sized gown.

DO NOT GET DEPO. DO NOT. It fucks with your hormones very much, and really not in a nice way.

I highly recommend the copper IUD, though. My life has been much happier since that switch, and my period actually got *shorter*. It sucks for about 24 hours when it goes in, then you don't have to worry about it for the next 10 years.

It's good.

Yeah, I hear good things. But what [livejournal.com profile] goingdriftless (above) is going through with a massively long period (or several end on end), and I don't think I could handle that. Plus I'm fiercely in love with my Diva Cup and would be a little worried.

I'm still hopeful that it's going to even itself out!! :) But yeah, it's not been fun'n'games in my vagina lately. Even with all the problems, I'm still glad I did the IUD. But I can totally understand that it's not for everyone.

I'm thinking of buying a Lunette cup. It's the one from Finland. It's supposed to be shorter than the Diva and have less suction, so it'd be theoretically safer to use with the IUD. You know me... if I do it, I'll definitely post about the whole durned experience! *grin*

I just did that and totally got caught nekkid knitting. My doc walked in and seemed confused. I referred to the fact that it was the day after Christmas and it was overdue christmas knitting.

And I'm all for deepo. I honesty didn't gain any weight from it. And even now, with 2 other conditions that predispose me to weight gain, my doctors seem fine with that. But I can't even remember to brush my hair every day, much less take pills every day.... so.... that might be their reasoning.
