New Orleans and the Gulf Coast
Sep. 2nd, 2005 03:36 pmI've been silent about the recent calamity. That's because I'm shocked and appalled and don't know how to react. Other than being shocked and appalled.
But now I'm getting pissed off. Really pissed off. It's all about things that have been gone over by others and that we're going to be rehashing and going over for years to come. The list:
-Evacuation - good. Evacuation which does not provide for those who can not evacuate themselves - bad.
-Existance of a federal response to the crisis - good. Slowness and inadequacy of the response - bad.
-National Guard troops showing why we have the National Guard - Good. National Guard guarding a far away country - bad.
-People helping other people in desperate times - good. People shooting at rescue vehicles, people raping and being raped, people looting hospitals - bad.
-Levies breaking - bad.
-Pumps breaking - bad.
-No funding to reinforce/change radically the levy system given eerily accurate predictions of this disaster before this disaster - very fucking bad.
-No adequate funding to deal with a displacement of people like this - very fucking bad. Especially as it wouldn't be as much of a problem if we weren't fighting a fucking moronic war without a goal without international support.

Things should not be in the state that they are in. No way. No how.
