An evening with anime

Just watched two movies - Akira and My Neighbor Totoro. They are radically different movies.

So Akira is some kind of cult classic. Yeah. Whatever. It's fucked up, that's true, but there's nothing overly wonderful and amazing about it. Maybe watching the dubbed version had something to do with it, but it didn't move me to obsession.

Totoro is wonderful. Not a lot of plot, but a lot of laugh out loud adorable things. If you get me a large Totoro plush I will love you forever. Yay!

Really glad we watched Akira first. Seriously.

Hayao Miyazaki creates the most adorable things.

My Neighbor Totoro is one of my favorite movies (and I have a plush (neko) cat bus! It's the awesome. It has little plush testicles and mice.

Have you seen Howl's Moving Castle yet?

Yes. And it (Howl's) is wonderful. At least in most aspects. Some of the story gets lame, but I can excuse it.

Is Totoro ok for kids? I've never seen it and someone said my 5 & 6 year old boys would love it.

Totoro is entirely appropriate for children. It was definately made with little kids in mind. The two main characters are girls, but that's the only thing that might put 5 and 6 year old boys off of it.

I saw Akira when I was in middle school and it was notable for being the most violent "cartoon" movie most of us had ever heard of.

Of course, the sum total of my anime knowledge involves the two movies you have just seen, namely
a) "TETSUOOOO!" "KANEDAAAA!"
and
b) There is a cat bus.
