Poking around there, I just found this awesome video, 1947, hosted by Pete Seeger with Woody Guthrie, about the banjo and southern folk music.
Woody Guthrie/southern mountain music is some of my favorite ever. Anyone know of some good albums I could find? We've got the Folkways: Kentucky Mountain Music, which is just amazing. I mean.... go listen if you can find it. Or watch the video.
Oh, and on the video there's a great version of Woody Guthrie doing "John Henry." Anyone know where I can find that? Because we loves it.
It's part of why I love Johnny Cash. If Johnny Cash didn't get so famous, so many of these songs would be lost to popular memory. Thanks to Cash, the songs are still in popular culture (kind of). Seeger to some extent, but he had a more limited audience. Early Dylan too, but he moved away. My favorite Dylan is the "I want to be Woody Guthrie" Dylan. Because Woody Guthrie kicks ass.
