Ani Difranco Offical Bootlegs
Aug. 3rd, 2005 09:09 pmAni Difranco means a lot to me. That is, her music means a lot to me. It was some of the first that I managed to find after extracting myself from Top 40 radio hell. Her words and her guitar somehow resonated with me and reinforced my newfound independence. And I've been lucky. Four years now I've lived in Madison and three times she's been here in concert - each time within easy walking distance of where I've lived. So I've seen her three times. And it's awesome. Because each time I have to remind myself that that person singing is the one who makes the albums I love. So let this be a preface to my rambling below (which I posted at folkitup for you crossovers).
I never quite understood the Bootleg thing. I mean, I get the live album thing, but the whole series? I dunno.
But I always said that I would get one if she put out one that I'd been to.
AND SHE DID! January 25, 2004. Madison, WI
Rock. I almost wish it was the first one I'd been to... in November of 2003 (the sitting down show referred to in the write up).... because who doesn't love their first Ani show, plus she did an amazing 'Self Evident,' only days after So Much Shouting came out. It was so intense. Just as she got to the part where she goes ""and we hold these truths to be self evident" the lights came out and everyone in the house (it seemed) shouted out "Number one: George W. Bush is not President".
I remember thinking that the January 2004 concert just released seemed short... but now I can have it forever. Without standing in the Wisconsin winter for two hours, without amazingly distracting girl dancing up and down the aisle, but also without the small intimate feeling of the run down and ancient venue of the Orpheum. It's a little theater from probably the 30s with awesome moldings and a shredding
I would like, in an ideal world, for her to release her last Madison concert as a double disc - disc one: Margaret Cho, disc two Ani Difranco - because it would be fucking awesome. It was an excellent climate for it.
